What 𛆰 means
A local syllable; context tells you the word.
Unicode lists njie42 as a reference reading; the final digits show its spoken pitch. Nüshu writes syllables, so one character can stand for words that sound alike.
Why did women write Nüshu?
It let them record and share local speech.
Women with little access to Chinese-character schooling used Nüshu for letters, poems and songs. Friends gave brides poetry booklets of wishes on the third day after marriage. Its forms draw on Chinese characters but mainly record sound. The oldest is a Taiping rebel-state coin (1851–1864); a 1933 survey is the first written record. China listed the custom as national intangible cultural heritage in 2006.

1Why does 𛆰 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
