What 𛆶 means
It records the local syllable twe33.
In this Latin-letter spelling, the digits mark the tone. Nüshu writes Jiangyong speech syllable by syllable, so this sign is read with the rest of its word.
Why did Jiangyong women use Nüshu?
It gave women a way to write and share local lives.
Nüshu emerged among women in Jiangyong County, Hunan, adapting square Chinese character forms into slanted syllable signs for local speech. Women used it for letters to close friends, songs, life stories and the “third-day letter”: a gift friends gave a bride three days after her wedding. Women in this rural society had limited access to formal literacy.
The earliest known artifact is a bronze coin from the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, a short-lived rebel government (1851–1864), bearing an eight-character Nüshu message meaning “All women are one family”; an early written mention appears in Hunan county survey notes from the early 1930s.
