What 𛆷 means
It gives a syllable; nearby words determine the sense.
Unicode gives “tswe44” as its common reading: its letters spell a Jiangyong syllable; 44 marks its tone or pitch. One Nüshu character can represent same-sounding local words, so nearby text supplies the meaning.
What did women write in Nüshu?
Letters, songs, life stories and wedding books.
Historically, women in Jiangyong, Hunan, used Nüshu, a syllabic script based on Chinese characters, to write local speech; many lacked education in Chinese characters. Women wrote to sworn sisters—close friends bound by a pledge—and gave brides sanzhaoshu (“third-day books”) on the third day after a wedding. Its use reaches at least the late imperial era; early 1930s reports discuss the script. Writers often burned or buried their work, so little early material survives. China recognized Nüshu as living cultural heritage in 2006.
