What 𛇇 means
It represents one spoken syllable in Nüshu. Nüshu writes local Chinese speech from Jiangyong with sound-based characters, unlike standard Chinese writing, which uses Han characters for words or parts of words. Unicode’s formal label Nushu Character-1B1C7 identifies the encoded position; it gives no Nüshu pronunciation or translation.
What did women write in Nüshu?
They wrote songs, letters, life stories and wedding booklets. A Nüshu wedding book called sanzhaoshu, or “third-day book,” was given to a bride three days after the ceremony, often by close female friends or relatives. By 2025, local and national authorities were also working to preserve Nüshu as endangered heritage.
