What 𛇘 means
It writes a local syllable, not a fixed word.
A standard Nüshu table maps it to 娘 (“mother”); the same syllable sign can stand for several homophones.
Why did women write Nüshu?
It let women write local speech and share it.
Women in Jiangyong adapted Han characters to local speech, writing poems, songs, biographies and wedding letters between friends pledged as sisters; many had little access to Han-character schooling. Surviving works date to late Qing; a county survey describes Nüshu in 1933. A bronze coin assigned to 1851–1864 is disputed; material analysis places it later, so it cannot firmly date the script. By 2025, Nüshu also had a public heritage role.

1Why does 𛇘 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
