What 𛇤 means
It marks a Nüshu syllable, not one fixed meaning.
The reference reading for this glyph is loe42; the final 42 marks its tone contour in the reading notation. Nüshu signs can represent syllables shared by several words, so surrounding writing supplies the intended word.
Why is Nüshu tied to women's writing?
Women used it to write local speech and share texts.
Nüshu adapted Chinese character forms to write the speech of Jiangyong County. Women taught it among mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends. They wrote letters between sworn sisters—friends bound by a friendship pact—along with life stories, songs, and wedding messages given to a bride on the third day. Calling it only a secret code misses its literary and social life: Nüshu is a way to write local speech, not a separate spoken language.
The script's beginnings are uncertain. Some manuscript copies are traced to China's late Ming and early Qing dynasties (around the 1600s); an inscribed coin from the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, a rebel state, dates to 1851–1864. By 2025, local and national efforts were promoting Nüshu's preservation as cultural heritage.

Questions people ask
2What does 42 mean in loe42?
It is tone notation: the digits describe a local pitch contour in the reading. They are not extra characters to append after 𛇤.
Why does 𛇤 look different in another font?
Fonts can draw the same Unicode character differently. If it appears as an empty box, the font lacks a Nüshu glyph; the text is still 𛇤.
