What 𛇰 means
It records “khu35,” a spoken syllable. Nüshu writes Jiangyong’s local Chinese dialect in Hunan; one sign can represent several words pronounced alike.
Historically, Jiangyong women, often unable to write Chinese, used Nüshu for poems, songs, and letters to sworn sisters, women bound by friendship. Brides received wish booklets three days after marriage. A Nüshu coin has been attributed to the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom (1851–1864), but its authenticity is disputed; the first documentary record is a 1933 Hunan survey. As of 2026, preservation work also treats Nüshu as cultural heritage.
