What 𛈒 means
It is a syllable, not one fixed Chinese word.
In Jiangyong, Hunan, its local reading is ciong42. A Nüshu list links it to Chinese characters such as 成, 城, 诚 and 盛; context shows which word is meant.
Why did women write Nüshu?
It offered women a way to write their speech.
Nüshu (“women’s writing”) arose among women in Jiangyong, Hunan, China; its forms adapted Chinese characters to write local speech by syllable. Women used it for poems, songs, letters and “third-day” books, gifts given to brides three days after marriage. The oldest known artifact is a bronze coin (1851–1864) saying women worldwide are one family; this dates surviving evidence, not the script’s beginning. It joined China’s intangible cultural heritage list in 2006.
