What 𛈞 means
It represents a spoken sound.
A 2012 Unicode proposal romanizes this character's Jiangyong reading as TCI44. Nüshu marks syllables—spoken beats—or similar sounds; context supplies word meaning.
What is the earliest evidence for Nüshu?
A coin from 1851–64 is the oldest known artifact.
Minted under China's Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, a rebel state, it says women everywhere are sisters in one family. Written descriptions of Nüshu appear in the early 1930s.
Nüshu adapts Chinese characters for Jiangyong speech. A 2004 study records competing origin theories: women's embroidery traditions and possible political use. Historically, women with limited access to formal schooling used it for biographies, letters between sworn sisters (women joined by chosen sisterhood), songs and wedding messages, sometimes stitching the writing onto cloth. By 2025, local and national authorities were working to safeguard Nüshu as cultural heritage.

1Why does 𛈞 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
