What 𛈼 means
Use a Nüshu input method.
As of 2026, Rime's Nüshu input method accepts Latin spellings of Jiangyong speech or pinyin (Latin spelling for Mandarin); select 𛈼 from the candidates.
What does 𛈼 say?
It represents a syllable, not one fixed word.
The reference reading is tsiang44. In Nüshu, a sign can match several homophonous Jiangyong words, so nearby text settles which one is meant.
Why did women write in Nüshu?
It let them write their own speech.
Many Jiangyong women had little access to reading Chinese characters. They wrote songs and letters; brides received cloth-bound san chao shu (“third-day books”) from female relatives or sworn sisters, women who had pledged sisterhood. Nüshu's written record reaches the nineteenth century. By the late twentieth century, few fluent readers remained. In 2018, local and national authorities were working to revive it.
