What 𛉌 means
It marks a syllable, not a fixed word. Its local pronunciation is written kue21. Nüshu lists link this sound to Chinese characters such as 嫁 (“marry”) and 街 (“street”); context identifies the intended word.
Why did women use Nüshu?
It let local women write their speech. Women passed Nüshu among mothers, daughters and friends pledged as sisters. A sanzhaoshu (“third-day letter”) brought friends’ good wishes to a bride after her wedding. The earliest known object, found in Nanjing, is a coin from the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, a rebel government (1851–64); its inscription says women everywhere are one family. A 1933 Hunan survey is the first documentary record. By the late twentieth century, few fluent users remained; preservation efforts followed.
