What 𛉍 means
Rime's Nüshu input method offers two routes.
Type the Jiangyong pronunciation in Latin letters, or enter Mandarin Pinyin—the Latin-letter spelling of standard Chinese pronunciation—for a corresponding Chinese character, then select the Nüshu result.
What does 𛉍 mean?
It represents a Jiangyong syllable, not one fixed word.
One published Nüshu list writes its local pronunciation as ye42 and pairs it with Chinese characters such as 爹 (dad), 云 (cloud), 爷 (grandfather), 匀 (even), 乌 (black), and 污 (dirty). Nüshu writes syllables, so nearby words decide which one is meant.
What was Nüshu used for?
It grew as a way for local women to write and share their speech. Nüshu took shape among rural women in Jiangyong, Hunan, adapting Chinese-script forms to record the local dialect syllable by syllable. Many women had limited access to schooling, so it carried their letters, autobiographies, and songs.
As of 2025, the earliest known Nüshu artifact is an inscription on a coin from the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, a rebel state that lasted 1851–1864. Its message says women everywhere are one family.
Traditionally, women embroidered Nüshu and sang together while sewing. “Third-day letters,” wedding wishes delivered to a bride three days after marriage, could console her and advise her on married life. This shared use is why the writing cannot be reduced to a secret code or simple rebellion. In 2025, local and national authorities were working to revive it as endangered heritage.
