What 𛉕 means
It records a spoken syllable, not a fixed English word.
Its reading is written in Roman letters as tci21-a: 21 marks tone, while -a distinguishes this entry. One Nüshu sign can represent several similar-sounding words, so context decides which one is meant.
Where did Nüshu begin?
In rural Jiangyong County, Hunan.
Women adapted Chinese-character forms to write local speech, often with limited access to schooling in Han characters. A coin found in Nanjing from China's Taiping rebel state (1851–1864) is the oldest known Nüshu artifact; its inscription calls women one family. The first documentary record is a 1933 Hunan survey. Jiangyong workshops began in 2003; China formally listed the script as cultural heritage in 2006.
