What does 𛉔 mean?
It records the local syllable tci21; context decides its word. Nüshu signs usually represent spoken syllables, and a syllable may stand for several homophones.
The coin does not settle Nüshu's age.
Nüshu developed among Han and Yao women in Jiangyong, Hunan, to write the local Chinese variety; its forms were adapted in part from Chinese characters. It gave women who could not write Han characters a way to record local speech. Women used it for songs, personal histories, letters between sworn sisters (close female friends), and booklets given to brides three days after marriage. Zhao Liming dated a Nüshu-inscribed coin to the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, a Chinese rebel state (1851–64); researcher Zhang Tiebao disputes that date and says the coin was not official currency. A 1933 provincial survey contains the first documentary mention.
