What 𛉜 means
In the Nüshu Rime input method, enter pw5.
This specialized input method accepts romanized readings from Jiangyong. Without a Nüshu-capable keyboard, pw5 is just letters and a digit.
What does 𛉜 represent?
It writes a Jiangyong syllable, not a single translated word.
Unicode records its Jiangyong reading as pw5. A Nüshu sign can stand for several local words with the same sound, so the surrounding sentence supplies the meaning.
Why was Nüshu written?
It gave local women a way to write their speech and lives.
Nüshu adapted Chinese character forms into slender, slanted signs for the local dialect of Jiangyong County, Hunan. Women taught it among themselves and used it for songs, poems, biographies, letters and wedding booklets of good wishes for a bride.
As of 2025, the earliest known physical artifact is a bronze coin issued by the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom (1851–1864), with an inscription calling women everywhere one family. In 2018, local preservation work included teaching materials, bringing Nüshu into public cultural heritage.
