What 𛉝 means
It records a spoken syllable; context selects the word. In Jiangyong speech, its representative reading is transcribed hw35. Nüshu character lists connect it to Chinese characters 扯 (“pull”), 海 (“sea”) and 害 (“harm”), whose meanings differ.
Nüshu signs draw on Chinese standard-script shapes to write local speech syllable by syllable. Researchers identify a carved coin model from the Taiping Rebellion of the 1850s, a civil war in China, as the earliest trace; it bears a motto about women and sisterhood but was never issued as money.
Local women used Nüshu in letters, songs, embroidery, wedding writing and mourning texts. As of 2026, it also appears in heritage teaching and contemporary art.

1Why does 𛉝 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
