What 𛉻 means
It writes a local syllable transcribed long35.
long35 is the romanized reading label: 35 marks a pitch contour rising from mid to high on a five-level scale, not an English word. Nüshu is a syllabic script; most characters write spoken syllables in Jiangyong's local Chinese dialect, though some can represent whole words.
Women in Jiangyong used Nüshu for letters, songs, life stories and wedding keepsakes; a “third-day letter” carried friends’ good wishes to a bride three days after her wedding. Nüshu adapted Chinese character forms to write local speech when many women had little access to formal literacy. Stories place the script in the Song dynasty, but that is an origin legend, not a firm date. A coin found in Nanjing has been attributed to the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom (1851–1864), though its authenticity is disputed. A county survey mentions Nüshu in 1931; scholarly and media attention widened in the 1980s.
On its own, 𛉻 is a Nüshu syllable, not a stand-alone reaction.
long35 is a sound label, not the English word “long.”
Drift: By 2025, Jiangyong heritage programs were teaching Nüshu and digitizing records, giving a once-local women's script a public preservation life alongside its older uses.
