What 𛊅 means
It sounds out a local syllable; the sentence supplies its word.
The reference reading is sa35; 35 marks tone. Nüshu writes Jiangyong speech by sound, so one syllable can match several words.
Why did women write in Nüshu?
It gave women a way to write local speech.
Nüshu adapted Chinese character forms for Jiangyong speech. Mothers taught daughters; friends exchanged letters; brides received sanzhaoshu, third-day books of good wishes. Women traditionally sang while sewing.
Written accounts survive from 1931 and 1933. A much-cited coin, often called Nüshu's oldest artifact, is disputed as a genuine Taiping rebel coin; it cannot date the script's start. Since the early 2000s, Nüshu has been recognized as cultural heritage.
