What 𛊃 means
It marks a syllable, not a single word.
A Nüshu dictionary table labels it “ng44,” a romanized Jiangyong pronunciation shared by Chinese characters such as 安, 饿, and 碗. The sentence shows which word is meant.
Why did women in Jiangyong use Nüshu?
It gave women a way to write their local speech.
In Jiangyong County, Hunan, China, women adapted Chinese character forms over time to record local speech when schooling was limited. They used Nüshu for letters, wedding books, and biographies. A bronze coin from the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom (1851–64) is the earliest known artifact. By 2026, heritage teaching and art also preserve the script.

1Why does 𛊃 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
