Nüshu character 𛊂

275/396

𛊂 records a sound in Nüshu, the writing tradition developed among women in Jiangyong, Hunan; it does not mean “woman.” A Nüshu dictionary gives its local reading as ing21. Historically, women used Nüshu to write and sing about daily life. Its shapes grew from Chinese character forms.

Text symbol

What 𛊂 means

It usually records a spoken sound, not a fixed idea.

A Nüshu dictionary gives this glyph the local Jiangyong reading ing21; its entry groups it with several Chinese character spellings that share that sound. Nüshu means “women’s writing,” but that names the script, not the glyph’s meaning.

What does it mean when someone sends 𛊂?

Alone, it gives you a sound, not the sender’s full message.

To work out which word was intended, you need the surrounding Nüshu text and the local speech it records. The same sound can be grouped with Chinese characters that have different meanings.

When was Nüshu first documented?

The earliest cited record is from 1933, not the script’s creation date.

The document is titled Survey Notes on Counties of Hunan Province. It records Nüshu in use; its date does not mark when the tradition began. Nüshu’s shapes developed from Chinese character forms into syllable writing for local Jiangyong speech.

Historically, women in Jiangyong County, Hunan, used Nüshu for poems, biographies, letters between women who had pledged friendship, and booklets given to brides on the third day after marriage. They also sang its writing aloud, often while sewing. Some texts offered comfort or voiced grief; other songs praised helping husbands and saving household money.

Researchers outside Jiangyong began studying Nüshu in the 1980s. By 2025, international heritage accounts also presented it as women’s cultural history, adding a public preservation frame to its earlier place in local life.
