nushu character-1b298

Nüshu Character U+1B298

297/396

𛊘 is a Nüshu sign: characters in this syllabic script usually write local sounds, not single Chinese words. Jiangyong women used forms derived from Chinese characters for poems, letters and wedding booklets despite limited Chinese literacy. An inscribed coin from China’s Taiping Rebellion (1851–64) carried a sisterhood message; the earliest written mention of Nüshu dates to 1931. By the late 20th century, few fluent users remained.

What 𛊘 means

An undated Jiangyong legend credits one woman; it is not settled history.

The legend says Hu Yuxiu was sent from home to the emperor’s palace and invented Nüshu to send laments back. Traditionally, Nüshu songs were sung aloud, while letters and wedding booklets linked women through writing.

1

Why does 𛊘 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Nushu block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
