nushu character-1b29a

Nüshu syllable lai44

299/396

𛊚 is a Nüshu character for the local Jiangyong syllable romanized as lai44. Nüshu, or “women’s writing,” was used for songs, autobiographies, sister-to-sister letters and wedding booklets. One sound can represent several Chinese words, so the surrounding sentence supplies the exact one.

What 𛊚 means

It writes a local syllable; the sentence supplies the word. Its Jiangyong reading is written in Latin letters and digits as lai44. This phonetic sign can correspond to Chinese words for east, lamp or winter; the surrounding line shows which word fits.

How did women use Nüshu?

Women used Nüshu to write local speech and share their lives. Nüshu—literally “women’s writing”—grew by adapting Chinese-character forms to the local Chinese variety spoken in Jiangyong. Many women had little access to formal literacy in standard Chinese writing, so the script carried poems, autobiographies, songs and letters between women who had pledged sisterhood. Friends also gave a bride a cloth-bound “third-day letter” three days after her wedding. The oldest known surviving artifact is a coin from the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom (1851–1864); its inscription says women worldwide belong to one family. A 1933 Hunan survey is the earliest written account.

Nüshu is also taught through heritage workshops; a 2025 report from Jiangyong describes male students among the learners.

What should I make of it if someone sends it alone?

Alone, it identifies a syllable but not the intended word. If someone sent only 𛊚, you can give its reading as lai44; the glyph alone cannot tell you which word they meant. Ask for the full Nüshu line or its translation before guessing.
