What 𛊮 means
One syllable can stand for several different words.
The Nüshu list records the Jiangyong reading siong21 and links the sign to these Chinese characters: 姓, 性, 幸, 犯, 岁, 鸭. Context shows which word is meant.
How was Nüshu used?
Women wrote local speech as songs and messages.
Nüshu forms draw on Chinese characters but mostly record sound. Its exact origin is debated; the earliest known artifact is a bronze coin from China's Taiping rebel kingdom (1851–1864). Where many women lacked literacy education, Nüshu carried poems, biographies, letters, and wedding booklets of good wishes exchanged among friends. The writings also preserve women's community life.
