What 𛋌 means

A Nüshu character table pairs it with 善 and records cing13.

cing13 is a Latin-letter transcription of its Jiangyong reading. Nüshu represents local speech syllabically, and same-sounding words can share one graph, so the full line helps settle the intended word.

Is Nüshu a script or a language?

It writes local Jiangyong speech; Nüshu is not a separate language.

Why did women use Nüshu?

It let local women write and share stories where schooling was limited.

Before 1949, women learned Nüshu in family and friend groups and sang texts while doing needlework. They wrote to sworn sisters and passed brides third-day wedding books—messages of good wishes given on the third day after a wedding. The writing grew from Chinese character forms adapted to local speech; it gave women with limited access to formal schooling a way to record their experiences.

The oldest known artifact is a Taiping Heavenly Kingdom coin dated 1851–1864, inscribed with a message that women around the world belonged to one family. Scholars still debate when and why Nüshu began.

Traditional and literary, rooted in women’s personal and communal writing in Jiangyong.

Alone, it can be ambiguous: same-sounding words may share one Nüshu graph, so the full line matters.

Drift: After 1949, broader schooling and social change reduced Nüshu’s everyday use. By 2025, local and national authorities were working to revive it as cultural heritage.
