Why did women use Nüshu?
It let women write their local speech. In Jiangyong, Hunan, women adapted Chinese-character shapes for their dialect. The oldest known Nüshu object is an 1851–1864 bronze coin from the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, a Chinese rebel state; its inscription says women everywhere are one family. The earliest documentary record is a 1933 Hunan survey.
Women wrote biographies, letters between women pledged as sisters, poems, songs and wedding messages given to brides three days after the ceremony. Public teaching later joined that personal literature: Jiangyong began Nüshu classes in 2003; China listed its custom as national intangible cultural heritage in 2006.
