What 𛋚 means
It records hw5, a Jiangyong syllable, not one fixed word.
In Jiangyong Nüshu, 𛋚 may write 黑 (“black”) or 害 (“harm”); both are matched with hw5. Nüshu records syllables, so nearby writing tells you which sound-alike word is meant. hw5 is a Latin transcription of local speech, not Mandarin pinyin.
Why did women in Jiangyong use Nüshu?
It let women write and share their local speech.
Nüshu adapted forms of Chinese Han characters to write local Jiangyong speech, which is not Mandarin. Women shared it in songs, biographies, letters between sworn sisters (close friends who pledged a sisterhood), and cloth-bound wedding letters given to brides three days after marriage. It evolved over generations in a society where access to formal Chinese-character education was limited. The earliest known Nüshu object is a coin from the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, a short-lived rebel state (1851–1864), and the first written account dates to 1933. Jiangyong began heritage workshops in 2003, giving the script a public teaching role.
