What 𛋲 means
Yes; one syllable can match different local words. Unicode lists ku44 for this sign: ku is the spoken syllable and 44 marks its tone contour. Read the surrounding Nüshu words to tell the word apart.
Women in Jiangyong, Hunan, adapted Chinese-character forms to write local speech; many had little schooling in those characters. Nüshu carried poems, songs, letters and third-day wedding messages. The earliest reported artifact is a coin from China’s Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, a rebel state (1851–1864), inscribed “women are one family.” By the late 20th century, few fluent writers remained as public study and preservation grew.
