old italic letter she

Old Italic Letter She

18/39

𐌑 was an Old Italic letter for a hissing consonant: southern Etruscan used it for “sh,” while northern Etruscan used it for “s.” Umbrian also used it, but its sound is uncertain. The letter follows the line from Phoenician Sade through Greek San.

What 𐌑 means

There was no single reading across Old Italic languages. A sibilant is a hissing speech sound. In Etruscan, southern writing used 𐌑 for “sh,” like the sound in “ship”; northern writing used it for “s,” like “sun.” Umbrian adopted the letter from a northern Etruscan model, but its value is uncertain: proposed readings include “sh,” a prolonged “s,” or a variant of Umbrian’s other s letter.

On its own, the character identifies the historical letter, not which language or sound a sender intends. Ask for the writing tradition before reading it aloud.

How did 𐌑 reach the Old Italic alphabet?

Greek San carried a Phoenician letter into the Old Italic alphabet. Greek settlers brought alphabetic writing into Etruria in the eighth century BCE. The oldest surviving Etruscan text dates to around 700 BCE; the Marsiliana alphabet tablet, from around 650 BCE, preserves the Greek-derived model.

The letter helped Etruscans write two distinct hissing sounds, “s” and “sh.” The same sign also appears in Umbrian, Venetic, and Raetic writing, where local alphabets adapted shared forms to their languages.

Can I use 𐌑 for the English “sh” sound?

Only when you mean its southern Etruscan reading. Northern Etruscan used 𐌑 for “s,” so it is not a universal way to spell English “sh.” Use it for the historical letter; use “sh” when spelling modern English.

Old Italic letterforms can look different across languages. For a historical transcription, choose a font intended for that language; a default font may show a form associated with another local alphabet.

A historical transcription letter whose reading depends on the language and regional spelling tradition.

Don’t read it as a universal “sh”: southern and northern Etruscan assigned it different sounds.

Why does 𐌑 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
