What 𝕄 means
It marks a math style; context supplies the meaning.
Blackboard bold—also called double-struck—developed as a way to distinguish mathematical symbols. When bold chalk was unavailable, writers doubled selected strokes on the board; the convention later became a printed type style, then a separate mathematical alphabet in Unicode.
That style is often used for standard number sets, but M itself has no fixed value. One group-theory paper, for example, uses 𝕄 for the Monster, a very large finite symmetry group; elsewhere, the author defines what M names. Unicode permits serifed and non-serifed forms, with or without serifs, while retaining the doubled-stroke cue.
In an equation, follow the writer's definition: double-struck marks the symbol's style, not a universal meaning.
Do not infer a fixed value for M from the doubled strokes alone.

Questions people ask
1Can 𝕄 turn into a plain M?
Yes. Unicode compatibility-normalization forms such as NFKC and NFKD can map mathematical alphanumeric letters to plain letters, erasing the style distinction.
