What 📂 means
It points to files, not one fixed action. Next to “check the project directory” (the project's folder on a computer), 📂 invites browsing. Next to “sorting the paperwork,” it signals filing. Let the words tell you whether to look something up or simply note that someone is organizing.
Why does a folder stand for computer files?
It borrows the paper office. Xerox's experimental Alto computer of the 1970s, then the Xerox Star workstation and Apple's Macintosh, drew storage as office objects: documents, folders, a wastebasket. This desktop metaphor stuck, so a folder still means a place that holds files. Software often draws an open folder for a folder whose contents are on show, or on an Open button, which is why 📂 can read as “have a look inside.”
Practical and low-risk in work messages about documents or projects.
📂 is not an attachment. Include the file or link you want someone to open.

2Worth knowing
- Before Unicode adopted 📂 in 2010, an open-folder pictogram already existed on Japanese mobile phones from the carrier KDDI (au), and Unicode mapped that symbol to this character.
