Where did ୩ come from?
It developed through gradual changes in Brahmi-derived Odishan numerals. Older numeral notation appears in inscriptions from the Bhaumakara period; records from the Somavamsi dynasty show zero entering Odishan notation in the 10th century.
Numbers in stone inscriptions and copper-plate grants—official records engraved on copper sheets—preserved political, economic, religious, and cultural information. The 1051 Urajam inscription is an early complete witness to the Odia script, though it does not date this exact digit's shape. In decimal numbers, position sets the value: ୩୦ is thirty and ୨୩ is twenty-three.
