Osage Capital Letter Ehta

26/72

𐓉 is the capital Osage letter Ehta, used for a t sound described as pre-aspirated or geminate. That means a brief breath comes just before the t, or the t is held longer. It appears in Osage words; its lowercase partner is 𐓱.

What 𐓉 means

It marks a t with a breath before it, or extra length. “Pre-aspirated” names the breath-before-t analysis; “geminate” means the consonant is held longer. Ehta is a letter within Osage words, and its lowercase form is 𐓱.

How did the modern Osage spelling system develop?

It grew from older Latin-based records and community-led reform. The Unicode proposal cites an Osage source attributed to Jesuit Father Ponziglione from circa 1851. A study of linguist Samuel Stehman Haldeman describes his Osage transcriptions from 1859–1860 as among the earliest recorded materials. They supported Bible translation, language documentation, and study; they were not the modern orthography.

The Osage Nation language program began in 2004 to address conflicting spellings. By 2006, learners and elders had developed a practical orthography, adapting or combining Latin shapes to write Osage sounds without assigning them English letter values. Revisions discussed in 2012–2014 introduced uppercase/lowercase pairs and single letters for pre-aspirated sounds such as Ehta. The Unicode proposal compared Osage’s encoding with Cherokee’s; that is a standards connection, not evidence that this letter descended from Cherokee.
