What 𐒺 means
The Osage sound guide labels it HY.
That is a cue for the sound represented by this Osage letter, not an English abbreviation. Read it as part of an Osage word.
When did this Osage script take shape?
It began taking shape in 2006. Earlier Osage texts used varying spellings with the Latin alphabet, the letter set used for English, and English letter values could confuse learners. The Osage Nation began a language program in 2004; in 2006, language director Herman “Mogri” Lookout worked with advanced learners and elders to create a consistent spelling system for Osage sounds, using recordings of elders. The letters adapt or fuse Latin forms, but the resulting characters are Osage letters with Osage sound values.
Revisions led to the current letter set in 2014, and the Osage Nation formally adopted the writing system in 2015. Hya belongs to this newer Osage alphabet, rather than to the earlier Latin spellings.
