What does 𐓙 mean?
It spells the oral “ai” sound in Osage.
A diphthong is one vowel sound that glides from one vowel position toward another. The Osage Nation’s sound guide compares its uppercase partner 𐒱 with the vowel in the English word “bite.”
This letter belongs to a modern writing system; earlier Osage texts used several Latin-based spellings. The Unicode proposal cites an early source from circa 1851; such transcriptions served Bible translation, language documentation, and study. By 2006, Herman “Mogri” Lookout and advanced learners had developed an Osage orthography to replace inconsistent spellings that could steer learners toward English sounds. The Osage Nation adopted its revised form in 2015. Its letter shapes grew from Latin forms, but Osage users consider the system a separate script.
