What 𐓤 means
It is the Osage lowercase letter for the plain k sound.
𐓤 is a consonant letter in the Osage alphabet. Its uppercase form is 𐒼.
How did Osage writing develop?
It developed from Latin-based spelling work into a distinct Osage script.
Earlier Osage writing used several ways to spell the language with Latin letters, for Bible translation, documentation, and study. A source cited in the Unicode proposal dates to around 1851 and is attributed to Father Ponziglione; it documents earlier Osage writing, not this exact letterform.
The development trail runs through 2004, 2006, 2014, and 2015. The Osage Nation began a standard-spelling project in 2004; by 2006, Herman Mongrain Lookout and advanced learners had designed letters modified or joined from Latin shapes. The set was refined in 2014 and formally approved by the Osage Nation in 2015. Latin is the documented source tradition; the result is a distinct Osage script used to write and teach Osage.
How do I type 𐓤?
Use an Osage keyboard layout and a font that supports Osage.
As of 2026, the Osage Culture orthography page recommends installing Noto Sans Osage and selecting it in Microsoft Word. For longer Osage text, use an Osage keyboard layout; the font controls how the letter is drawn.
