What 𐓪 means
It is the lowercase Osage vowel O.
For the Osage o sound, the Osage Nation sound guide compares capital 𐓂 with the vowel in English “oh”; 𐓪 is its lowercase counterpart. It is written inside Osage words.
The Osage Nation began a standard-orthography program in 2004 after two centuries of ad-hoc Latin spellings and transcriptions. A practical design was ready by 2006; work in 2012–2014 refined the letters into the standard set adopted in 2014. The aim was to represent Osage on its own terms and keep learners from relying on English spelling habits. The redesign moved Osage from ad-hoc Latin spellings into a standard community script used in classrooms, print, and digital text.
Is 𐓪 Latin o or Osage?
It is Osage, not Latin.
Osage is a separate script whose letters were designed to sit comfortably alongside Latin type. That visual kinship does not make 𐓪 and Latin o interchangeable: Osage spelling uses this distinct letter.
Can I type 𐓪 on a phone?
Yes, with Osage keyboard and font support.
As of 2026, Osage Culture’s setup guide recommends Noto Sans Osage on computers and gives Android steps: Settings Languages Add Keyboard Osage.
An unsupported font may show 𐓪 as a blank box. Osage words can also use combining marks for nasalization, vowel length, and pitch; their positioning depends on font shaping, while 𐓪 alone is an unmarked base letter.
Inside an Osage word, 𐓪 is an ordinary lowercase vowel; alone, it reads as a letter sample.
Keep Latin o out of an Osage spelling; it is a different character despite the similar shape.
