Why did Osage change its spelling?
The newer spelling kept English letter sounds from steering Osage reading.
Older Osage writing used Latin letters (the alphabet used for English) for Bible translation, language records, and study. One record from circa 1851 used them. By 2006, language director Herman Mongrain Lookout and advanced learners had developed a spelling system using modified or combined Latin letters to better fit Osage sounds.
