What 𐇻 means
There is no confirmed ancient reading; “small axe” is a modern catalogue label.
The label describes one interpretation of the sign’s shape, not a translation. Other published descriptions include an aquatic plant leaf, bull’s hide, and small hatchet. The Phaistos Disc signs remain undeciphered, so this character cannot securely be read as “axe,” a tool word, or a deity’s name.
Its earliest secure appearance is on the fired clay disc excavated at Phaistos in 1908. Archaeological comparisons date the disc around 1750 BCE; the Unicode Standard gives a wider proposed range, mid-18th to mid-14th century BCE. The disc was made by pressing prepared stamps into wet clay and firing it. As of 2026, no second example of this sign system is established.
The disc’s purpose is disputed. Its repeated groups, spiral layout, and deliberate firing have been used to argue for a religious or magical display text; other proposals include a poem, hymn, court list, or game. Phaistian impressed pottery shares stamping techniques and some motifs. Cretan Hieroglyphic and Linear A are regional comparisons, not proven ancestors or decipherments.
How should I read 𐇻 in modern text?
Treat it as a Phaistos reference, not a readable axe word.
In a specialist caption or sign chart, it identifies one sign from the Phaistos Disc. Alone in casual chat, it gives little clue what the sender means; name the Phaistos Disc if that reference matters.
Specialist and archival; without context, it reads as an obscure Phaistos reference, not an ordinary axe symbol.
Do not expect someone to read “axe” without context.

Questions people ask
1Why can 𐇻 look reversed?
It is the same encoded character. The Unicode scholarly presentation uses a left-to-right orientation, and its representative shape is mirrored relative to the impression on the disc.
