What 🅫 means
It marks a registered trademark in Canadian French use.
MD abbreviates French marque déposée (“registered trademark”). By 2005, Quebec’s French-language authority described MD in small capitals above the line as an optional mark after a registered trademark. A 2010 Unicode proposal sought a single text character because typeset superscript letters could disrupt line spacing.
This Canadian French pair distinguishes registered MD from unregistered MC; is another registered-mark sign. NFKC, Unicode’s compatibility cleanup, turns 🅫 into plain MD and removes its raised styling.
A compact legal mark, formal and matter-of-fact.
MD means registered; MC means a trademark that is not registered.
Questions people ask
1Why does 🅫 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
