What 🅬 means
It marks a brand as a registered trademark.
MR comes from the Spanish and Portuguese “marca registrada” (“registered mark”). The symbol gives those initials a compact form beside a brand name.
The printed convention predates its Unicode character. A 2017 proposal records raised, lowered, dotted M.R. and circled forms on Mexican products and older Brazilian soda bottles. It reports that in Mexico MR served as an alternative to ®, though ® was more common, and asked for one character to encode these varied designs.
Why does 🅬 sometimes become MR?
Text cleanup can flatten it to MR. Unicode’s NFKC normalization—a rule that standardizes compatible text forms—reduces 🅬 to ordinary M and R, removing the raised styling.
On packaging, it reads like a formal brand detail.
It asserts registration; don’t use it as decoration.
