What ™️ means
It marks a phrase as claimed, branded, or mock-official.
In a product or business name, the trademark symbol says the writer is treating that name as their trademark. The claim can exist before registration, so TM is not the same as ®.
In a casual post it works as deadpan punctuation. Stick it on an everyday phrase and you turn that phrase into a fake brand, a running bit, or a deliberately overconfident slogan.
When is ™️ being used as a joke?
It's a joke when the phrase couldn't be a real brand. A phrase followed by ™️ is usually a playful claim of ownership, not a legal announcement. The joke lands hardest when the phrase is too ordinary, personal, or grandiose for a brand department.
That wink can read smug or confusing outside shared online tone. With a colleague, client, or unfamiliar audience, leave the trademark emoji off unless you want to sound like you are selling something.
Formal beside a brand name; cheeky after an everyday phrase.
™️ does not mean the mark is registered or legally protected.

3Worth knowing
- The characters behind ™️ existed in Unicode 8 years before anyone was allowed to draw them in colour: Unicode 3.2 in 2002, emoji presentation in 2010.
- ™️ is not one character. It is 2 of them glued together, which is why deleting it sometimes takes two presses of backspace and why it breaks character counters.
Questions people ask
2Why does the trademark emoji look different?
It can. Unicode Emoji v17.0 distinguishes the plain base character from the emoji presentation sequence, so fonts and apps may show ™ as text or ™️ as a colorful symbol.
Can I use TM for an unregistered brand?
Yes. The TM notice can be used for an unregistered mark, but it does not guarantee legal protection or registration.
