It marks a claim to a service brand.
SM vs TM: ™ can mark goods or services; ℠ specifies services.
Historically, inn signs and business names identified a service. U.S. advocates sought recognition in the 1920s; the 1946 Lanham Act (U.S. trademark law) treated service marks like product marks.
Formal, commercial, and legal.
℠ announces a claim; it does not mean the mark is registered.
