splatter

Splatter

🫟 is a splat: a blob of paint, ink, sauce or mud that has just hit something, with little drops flying off it. People send it for art, messy cooking, kids' craft chaos and anything that went "splat". It is one of the newest emoji, so on an older phone it may show up as a blank box.

What 🫟 means

A messy splat of liquid, usually read as paint or ink. The picture is a flat, irregular puddle with a few drops that have bounced off it, the shape a dropped paint pot or a thrown water balloon leaves on the floor. Nothing in the name says what the liquid is, and that is the point: the same mark works for a paint splatter, an ink blot, a tomato-sauce accident, slime, mud or a puddle.

In practice people reach for it when something is colourful and messy. Painters and crafters put it next to work-in-progress photos, parents use it for finger-painting afternoons, cooks add it to a sauce-everywhere kitchen story, and anyone can use it as a sound effect, the written version of "splat". It is playful by default; it carries no sadness, anger or warning of its own.

What does it mean when someone sends 🫟?

Usually "that got messy" or "look at this splat", said with a grin. On an art post it is applause for bold, loose work. After a story about dropping lunch, it is the punchline. Sent with an excited message it is a burst of energy, like a cartoon impact.

On its own it is vague by design. If the chat gives no clue, reply to the topic rather than the blob. If you are the one sending it to someone who may not have this emoji yet, add a word, because a blank square carries no joke at all.

Casual and playful, fine with friends, family and public posts; too loose for anything formal.

Like 💦, a lone 🫟 can be read as a sex joke; add a word if that is not what you mean.

Worth knowing

  • Emoji 16.0 added only eight new emoji in 2024, one of the smallest batches ever, and 🫟 was one of them alongside a fingerprint, a harp and a tired face with bags under its eyes.
  • The proposal pitched it as a substance-neutral splash so it could stand for paint, ink, food and spills at once, which is why its official name says nothing about what the liquid is.

Questions people ask

2

Why does 🫟 show as a blank box or a question mark?

Because the device's fonts are too old. 🫟 arrived in 2024 and phones and computers only started drawing it during 2025. Update the software, or expect older contacts to see a square instead of a splat.

What colour is the splatter emoji?

It varies by device. As of 2026 most designs show a single purple or violet blob with small drops; a few lean pink or blue. None of the major designs is red, which keeps it from reading as plain blood.
