Artist

A person with a painter's palette, standing for anyone who makes art. The palette is the flat board painters hold while mixing colours, and in most designs the figure wears the beret and smock of the stereotypical Parisian painter, often with a paint smudge or two. As of 2026 some platforms also put a brush in the other hand. Nothing in the picture limits it to oil paint: people who draw, sketch, illustrate, do digital art, tattoo, make comics or craft all use it for themselves.

Its home is wherever people share what they made. It sits in bios and usernames of people who draw, in captions of a finished piece, next to progress shots and in posts announcing that someone is taking requests or commissions. Art teachers and parents use it for a child's drawing. It is also the natural emoji for messages about an exhibition, a museum visit or an art class.

It is a role emoji, one of a set that includes the teacher, the doctor and the cook, all built the same way: a person joined to an object that says what they do. That is why it looks like a person and a palette fused together rather than a single drawing.

What does it mean when someone sends 🧑‍🎨?

Either “this person made it” or “you're talented.” Under a picture, it marks the creator, whether that is the sender or someone they are crediting. As a reply to something you made, it is praise, usually light-hearted: the beret says you have been promoted to artist. Between friends it can also tease, for instance after a wobbly doodle or a very creative excuse.

With no picture around, it usually announces an activity or a mood: an afternoon of painting ahead, a new hobby, a creative block, a finished project. It carries no negative meaning on its own, so there is nothing hidden to decode; the only thing to check is whether the sender is pointing at themselves, at you or at a third person.
