Vatican flag emoji 🇻🇦
The Vatican flag emoji is not a picture stored in Unicode but a pair of letters: the regional indicator symbols and , Vatican City's country code VA. Phones and Macs draw the pair as the flag; Windows has no country flag pictures in its emoji font, so there the same emoji shows as the letters VA. Anyone who receives it on a phone still sees , and typing 'vatican' in the emoji search of iPhone, Android or WhatsApp finds it. It is also the emoji people use for the papal flag: the flag of Vatican City is the pope's flag, and there is no separate one.
The flag is two vertical bands, yellow at the pole and white at the fly, with the arms of the Holy See on the white half: two crossed keys, one gold and one silver, tied with a red cord, under the papal tiara, the triple crown . The keys are the keys of the kingdom of heaven that, in the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus gives to Saint Peter, the first bishop of Rome; gold is usually read as the power in heaven and silver as the power on earth. Yellow and white became the papal colours in 1808, when Pope Pius VII chose them for his guard in place of the older red and yellow. When the picture is too small to see the keys, people write the colours in hearts, , or the keys themselves, .
The real flag is square. Vatican City and Switzerland are the only two sovereign states whose national flags are square, and the Swiss link does not end there: the pope's guard is Swiss.
Vatican City emoji meanings:

CLDR estimates put its population at about 1,000. The country is Vatican City; the Holy See is the government of the Catholic Church that it exists to serve, and it is the Holy See that sends ambassadors and sits at the United Nations as an observer.

There is no pope emoji in Unicode, and no emoji for a priest, a nun, a mitre or a crucifix either. People write the pope with what they see of him: for prayer, for his white cassock, for the arms of his office, for the window of the Apostolic Palace from which he prays the Angelus with the crowd in the square every Sunday at noon, for the Urbi et Orbi blessing, 'to the city and to the world', that he gives at Christmas and Easter, and for the popemobile. Searches for 'pope Leo emoji' come from Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago, elected on 8 May 2025: the first pope from the United States, and a citizen of Peru, where he served for many years, so people greet him with . His predecessor Francis, the first pope from Latin America, was from Argentina ; before him came Benedict XVI from Germany and John Paul II from Poland .

When a pope dies or resigns, the cardinals under 80 meet in the Sistine Chapel and vote in secret until one name has two thirds of the votes; the word comes from the Latin cum clave, 'with a key', because they are locked in. At the end of each voting session, the ballots are burned in a stove whose chimney rises from the chapel roof. black smoke means no pope yet; white smoke, with the bells of Saint Peter's , means there is one, and soon a cardinal steps onto the balcony of the basilica to announce Habemus Papam, 'we have a pope'. Vatican symbols: the euro, the lira, Italian and Latin
Vatican City is not in the European Union, but by agreement with it uses the euro , written after the amount in the Italian way, 20 , and mints its own euro coins with the pope's portrait or coat of arms; special sede vacante coins have been struck in the time between two popes. So few are made that they rarely turn up in change and collectors pay well above face value. Before 2002 it had the Vatican lira, minted at par with the Italian lira and, like it, often written with the sign although no lira sign was official. The Vatican's currency symbol, in short, is the euro sign.
Italian is the everyday and working language of Vatican City, spoken by about 800 of its people by CLDR estimates, while Latin remains the official language of the Holy See, used in its laws and great documents; the Swiss Guard drills in German. Latin needs no letters beyond A–Z, but Italian uses accented vowels à è é ì ò ù; they are not extra letters in its 21-letter alphabet. The grave on à ì ò ù marks a stressed last vowel, as in città, city, and Santità, Holiness; è and é tell open e from closed e, as in è, is, against perché, why. Italian quotes with « » or “ ”.
On an Italian keyboard the small letters have their own keys. Elsewhere, on Windows hold Alt and type 0224 for à, 0232 è, 0233 é, 0236 ì, 0242 ò, 0249 ù, or 0192 À, 0200 È, 0201 É, 0204 Ì, 0210 Ò, 0217 Ù for the capitals. On a Mac press Option and then the letter for a grave accent, or Optione and then e for é. On a phone, hold the letter down and pick the accent. In HTML they are à, è, é and so on. The full alphabet is on the Italian letters page.
