What ☧ means
It names Christ through two Greek letters. The XP symbol combines Greek chi (Χ) and rho (Ρ), which resemble Latin X and P. They are the first two letters of Χριστός (Christos, “Christ”), so the mark is a Christogram: a sign built from Christ’s name.
Greek scribes used chi-rho groups as abbreviations for several words beginning with those letters in the Ptolemaic period. That earlier shorthand does not establish that a standalone Christian emblem existed before Constantine; that question remains disputed. In the fourth century, Constantine’s program gave the Christ monogram an imperial and military role, associating it with victory and divine protection.
On fourth-century Roman sarcophagi, a wreath around the monogram framed Christ’s resurrection as victory over death. In early medieval Irish and British Gospel books, scribes enlarged XPI—an abbreviation for Christ—at the opening of Matthew’s account of Jesus’s birth, turning it into elaborate page art. Later, in the Theodosian period, the plain cross became more prominent while the Chi Rho remained in Christian art.
What does ☧ mean in a text?
Read it as a deliberate Christian reference. A sender may be expressing personal faith, pointing to worship or baptism, or marking remembrance. The surrounding words tell you which.
Church art may make the sign familiar to some readers; others may take it for an ornate cross or an unfamiliar monogram. By itself, ☧ gives no denomination or political stance. If you mean historical design rather than personal belief in work chat or a new relationship, say so in words.
What is the difference between Chi Rho, staurogram, and rho-cross?
They are related Christian signs built from different letters. ☧ joins chi and rho. The staurogram 𐆠 joins Greek tau and rho; the rho-cross is organized around a cross whose upper arm meets a rho-like loop. Both differ from the chi-rho construction.
In sans-serif type, the staurogram and rho-cross can look closer than their different constructions suggest. Check the letter structure, not the silhouette.
Explicitly Christian and solemn; it signals belief more than a passing mood.
Can I send Chi Rho to my boss? Add context unless open religious expression is already welcome.

1Why does ☧ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
