What ⎬ means
It is the middle piece of a tall right curly brace. A typesetting system uses this math brace piece between matching upper and lower hooks; extension pieces let the brace span a multi-line expression.
The curly brace was already used to organize hierarchical information in a printed book in 1503. By the mid-1500s, printed examples show printers assembling tall braces from short straight rules and curved corners. A 1999 Unicode proposal records separate brace pieces already used in TeX, PostScript, HP Math8, Microsoft Symbol, and DEC VT terminals to display oversized mathematical symbols.
How is a tall right brace assembled?
The basic sequence is ⎬. A typesetting system can add the curly-brace extension around the middle piece when the expression needs more height.
⎬ is not interchangeable with }. The ordinary right curly bracket is a complete punctuation or programming character; ⎬ is one segment of a constructed brace.
A specialist component for mathematical layout and technical typesetting; in ordinary text it reads as an unfinished fragment.
A lone ⎬ is not a normal closing brace; use } for a complete one.
