Rounded Symbol for Fu

44/49

🉠 is the Chinese character 福 (fú), meaning good fortune and blessing, drawn in a rounded decorative style. It's a text symbol, not an emoji, from a Unicode set of six Chinese folk symbols. Sent to you, it's a good-luck wish, often around Lunar New Year. An empty box just means your font lacks it.

What 🉠 means

The blessing character 福, bent into a round decorative shape. 福 (said roughly "foo" with a rising tone) means good fortune, happiness and blessing. Rounded designs of lucky characters are a familiar Chinese decorative style, and 🉠 is one such form of 福 as a typeable symbol.

At Lunar New Year (Spring Festival), families paste a red paper square with 福 on their doors. It is often hung upside down on purpose: 倒 dào, "upside down", sounds like 到 dào, "arrive", so it says "good fortune has arrived".

🉠 opens a set of six rounded signs: five blessings, 🉠 福 fortune, 祿 prosperity and official rank, 壽 long life, 喜 joy and 財 wealth, plus 囍 double happiness, the wedding sign. Fu, Lu and Shou are also three star gods, often seen as a trio of figurines in Chinese homes.

What does it mean if someone sends it?

A wish for good luck, the same as writing 福. It fits New Year greetings, a new home, a new job or a birthday. It is rare in chat, so it reads as warm and a little decorative; the plain 福 is far more familiar and displays on many more devices.

Warm, festive and auspicious; rooted in Chinese folk religion, but usually sent simply as a good-luck wish.

If the recipient sees an empty box, send plain 福 instead.

Questions people ask

3

Is it Chinese, Japanese or Korean?

The custom is Chinese, but 福 is shared: Japanese reads it fuku, Korean bok, Vietnamese phúc, all with the sense of good fortune.

Can I turn it upside down for the New Year pun?

Not in text. There is no upside-down version of this character to type; a printed or drawn 🉠 can be hung upside down for the same pun, just like paper 福.

Why do I see an empty box?

Your font has no drawing for 🉠. The message is fine; the plain 福 carries the same meaning and displays far more widely.
