What ᛣ means
It marks the plain k sound in Old English runic writing.
Old English sound changes made ᚳ (cen) cover more than one sound: before some front vowels, such as e or i, it could shift toward “ch” in “church.” Calc is a modified form of ᚳ that marks plain k. The two runes are historically connected, not interchangeable labels.
A carved Calc appears on the Ruthwell Cross from the 8th century. The Kingmoor and Bramham Moor rings from the 9th–10th century also use it in charm formulas. The name Calc is disputed: it has been linked to chalk or limestone, a heel or sandal, and possibly a chalice; those proposed etymologies do not establish a symbolic meaning.
Does Calc have a fixed divination meaning?
No established Old English divination meaning is known.
As of 2026, no separate, established divination reading for Calc is recognized in modern Anglo-Saxon Futhorc practice. If someone assigns it a meaning in a modern reading, that belongs to their personal or adapted system; ask which one they use.
Historical or deliberately runic; in a modern message, the sender’s system sets the tone.
A personal divination reading is not a documented Old English rune value.
