What ࠇ means
It has no standalone word meaning. “It” names the letter.
The Samaritan script developed from Paleo-Hebrew, an older Hebrew script in the Phoenician alphabet tradition; square Hebrew took a different path. Mount Gerizim inscriptions from the third and second centuries BCE use Paleo-Hebrew and square Hebrew, not the distinct Samaritan script. Scholars place its emergence between the late Hasmonean period (a Judean era) and the first century CE; its distinct features appear by the third century CE.
It writes Samaritan Hebrew and Aramaic, especially sacred texts and liturgy. By the 10th and 11th centuries, Arabic also served the community’s spoken and literary life; Samaritan script could mark more sacred passages. It reappeared in Arabic poems for festivals in the 20th century. A missing font may show Samaritan It as a box or blank; poor positioning can misplace the added yut mark stacked with It.

Questions people ask
1Why does ࠇ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Samaritan block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
